Starting university can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. A mix of independence and opportunity – so it can feel challenging to find where you truly belong. For many students, one of the best ways to connect, destress and thrive academically at uni is by getting involved in hobbies or joining societies. At the University of East London, there’s no shortage of that. Whether you’re into music, volunteering, gaming or like me, passionate about sports and fitness, there’s a community for everyone where you can feel a sense of belonging.

My hobby – how the gym keeps me grounded

As a UEL student and someone who is into health and fitness, the gym has become an essential part of my daily university routine. Where I go between lectures, assignments and any sort of work commitments – stepping into the gym feels like a well-deserved reset. Personally, fitness isn’t just about physical health – it’s about building discipline, focus and mental clarity. It builds structure in my day-to-day life which reflects in my studies.

UEL’s SportsDock, a state-of-the-art sports facility located on UEL’s Dockland’s campus, has been a huge part of my journey. The vibes there are unmatched, whether it’s about lifting weights, playing basketball with friends or joining a fitness class. It’s a place where people from all backgrounds come together with shared energy and motivation. It’s not only about working out but also about being a part of a community that pushes each other to do better.

Why hobbies matter in university life

Uni life can be overwhelming at times, especially when you’re caught juggling coursework, part-time jobs and other social commitments. Having a hobby or joining a society, regardless of what it might be, creates a healthy, balanced approach to keeping a clear head and makes you feel ready to tackle another day. For me, going to the gym has taught me time management – planning workouts around my study schedule has helped me stay consistent and productive.

Beyond personal benefits, hobbies also give you something to look forward to – a space where you can freely express yourself and recharge after a long day. They’re essential to maintaining your physical and mental wellbeing during your time at university.

Exploring societies at university

At unithere’s something for everyone. If you’re looking to expand your horizons, most universities offer a wide variety of societies that cater to every interest. Even if you’re not a sports enthusiast, joining a society can help you find your people.

Here’s just a few examples:

  • Fashion Society – for creative students passionate about fashion shows, exhibitions, networking and fun social events.
  • Basketball Society – a vibrant and inclusive community that welcomes players of all levels.
  • Dance Society –express yourself creatively while staying active and meeting new friends.
  • Esports Society – for gamers who love strategy, teamwork, and friendly tournaments.
  • Film and Media Society – a space for creative minds to collaborate and discuss projects.
  • African-Caribbean Society (ACS) – celebrating culture, unity, and identity through social and educational events.
  • Gospel Music Society – bringing students together through singing, performing and uplifting community spirit.

Finding your people

If you’re starting your journey at university or looking to make connections that last a lifetime, I highly recommend exploring both hobbies and societies that align with your passions. You don’t have to be an athlete to join a sports society or a professional artist to attend a creative club – some of the best connections I’ve made with people are through doing what I love, and I encourage you to do the same!

Personally, the gym has been that community – a constant source of focus, motivation and positivity. But for you, it might be a debating society, a music club or even a volunteering project. Whatever your interest may be, there’s a community waiting for you.
