Starting university was a whirlwind of emotions… One of the best choices I made in my first week was joining the dance society. I’ve been dancing since I was three years old, so it felt natural to seek out a space where I could keep that passion alive.

I still remember walking into the auditions for the intermediate hip hop team unsure if I’d make the cut. Fast forward to the second year, and I’m now the intermediate hip hop executive and the society’s social secretary. It’s been an incredible journey.

Finding my team

Joining the intermediate hip hop team in my first year was like stepping into a whole new world. I’d danced before, but never in such a close-knit and driven group.

Our rehearsals were intense but so much fun with one hour of choreography, laughter and the occasional sore muscle. We trained hard for competitions and pushed ourselves to improve. Most importantly, we bonded over shared struggles (like trying to master that one move that just wouldn’t land).

But it wasn’t just about dancing. My team quickly became my second family. We supported each other through every rehearsal, hyped each other up before performances and celebrated every win. I met students from all kinds of backgrounds and courses, each bringing their own style and energy. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so much talent and dedication.

Competitions and highlights

One of the highlights of the year was performing at the university’s annual dance showcase. The lights, the crowd, the adrenaline: it was electric.

It built up my confidence in semester one for the upcoming competition season! Going to four different universities and competing against them was an intense but exciting experience and I can’t wait to do it all over again this year.

Stepping into leadership

This year, everything shifted. I applied for the role of intermediate hip hop executive and social secretary and to my surprise I got both. So far it has required a lot of responsibility, creativity and growth. Having my own team is a full circle moment for me and I could not be more grateful.

As the intermediate hip hop exec, I help lead rehearsals, create choreography, and make sure our team is ready for competitions. It’s a big change from being a dancer to helping shape the team’s direction, but I absolutely love it.

Building a community

Being a social secretary adds another layer of excitement. I organise our socials from themed nights out to sober social and team dinners. From dressing as your type to princess and the pea, we know how to have fun.

These events aren’t just about partying; they’re about creating memories and building community. Some of my closest friendships started over post-rehearsal meals or in rehearsal laughs.

What makes our dance society special isn’t just the choreography or the competitions; it’s the culture. We’re an inclusive and supportive group. Whether you’re a second-year dancer or just starting out, there’s a place for you. This is what I love most about my society.

How dance shaped my growth

From nervously auditioning in the first year to leading and organising in the second year, my journey has been full of challenges and unforgettable moments.

Dance has also helped me grow personally. I’ve learned how to lead with empathy, communicate clearly and manage my time (especially when juggling rehearsals with coursework).

As we gear up for the competition season, I’m more motivated than ever. We’re working on a new routine that blends new hip hop with hard hitting elements, and it looks fierce. I’m also excited to welcome new members and help them find their place in the society, just like I did.

Find your space to grow

Being part of the dance society has been the highlight of my university experience. It gives me a sense of purpose, a creative outlet during stressful times, and a community I genuinely cherish.

University can be overwhelming, especially at the beginning. But finding a space where you can grow is invaluable.

If you’re a student wondering whether to join… do it. Whether you’re into hip hop, contemporary, jazz, or just want to try something new, there’s a team and a vibe for you.
