As\u00a0a student, you\u00a0very quickly\u00a0become aware of\u00a0the\u00a0level of effort you need to put in to meet the minimum requirements for passing\u00a0your course, but is that enough?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Faster than you could\u00a0possibly imagine, your studies will be\u00a0over,\u00a0and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be competing with hundreds of thousands of other\u00a0graduates for post-graduate placements,\u00a0schemes\u00a0and jobs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means you need to be at the top of your\u00a0game,\u00a0or you might find these roles will pass you by.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Have we just sent you into a little existential crisis<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n

If so, we do apologise, but\u00a0with\u00a0our apology, we\u2019re armed with one of the simplest tips to help\u00a0you\u00a0reach for those higher grades\u00a0and give you more confidence in your own abilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you ready?<\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the best things you can do as a student is self-directed study.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-directed study means using your own initiative and doing wider reading.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

No, that\u2019s not turning your iPad on its side and reading in landscape, it\u2019s taking the\u00a0ideas\u00a0discussed in your\u00a0lectures\u00a0and exploring them independently. That means research, taking notes\u00a0and\u00a0understanding your\u00a0weaknesses so you know where you need to improve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, as a\u00a0university student\u00a0you may have one lecture per week, per module with up to a few hundred other students\u00a0at a time.\u00a0Your lecturer can sow the seeds of your education and spark an interest, but they may not have\u00a0the\u00a0time to\u00a0delve into\u00a0topics\u00a0and\u00a0explore them fully, which gives you the perfect opportunity to do it yourself!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Essay and exam time is always busy, but there is always time\u00a0outside of lectures to conduct some self-directed study\u00a0with tangible benefits, including:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Helping\u00a0you\u00a0prepare\u00a0better\u00a0for seminars<\/span><\/h3>\n

You\u2019re often asked to read a chapter ahead of a seminar, but what if you read beyond that? What if you went as far as to back up what you had read with a case study or\u00a0could reference\u00a0a theory found in another text?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will provide you with\u00a0both the knowledge and notes to prove an excellent point in an essay or assessment that will form part of your marks for the module.\u00a0Your lecturer would also be really impressed!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Building a good rapport with your lecturer is not something that is spoken about enough, but it is something you should do. You have a lot to learn from your lecturers and\u00a0if you have a good\u00a0relationship\u00a0they\u2019re often more responsive and likely to keep in touch after university, meaning you can\u00a0show them how far you\u2019ve gone!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Improved problem-solving skills<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

You may not find the answer you\u2019re looking for on your first attempt, so you\u00a0can\u00a0try again, altering your search term\u00a0or\u00a0try\u00a0searching in different places until you find exactly what it is that you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-directed study\u00a0forces you to do some of the thinking yourself to find the answers and this\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0well sought-after skill\u00a0in the modern workplace, which will make you a stand-out candidate if you can prove your ability to solve a problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Broader knowledge<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

By conducting self-directed study, you\u2019re exposing yourself to a wealth of knowledge that could potentially help\u00a0you\u00a0become an expert in your field. Knowing more about a topic will also help articulate your ideas better which in turn will boost your essay grades.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Beginning your self-directed study journey is easy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few simple steps to help you get\u00a0started:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Consider your weaknesses \u2013 what don\u2019t you understand fully, what could you do with learning more about?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Create a list of topics\u00a0you want to expand upon before beginning your study session<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0so that you have a\u00a0clear focus\u2026this is the \u2018directed\u2019\u00a0part\u00a0of self-directed study.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Be\u00a0open\u00a0to using different tools to help you gain knowledge. You may want to try using the physical books and journals in the library\u00a0or access\u00a0all of\u00a0the books available to you on\u00a0the\u00a0Kortext<\/a>\u00a0platform\u00a0so it\u2019s easier to search for what you need.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

  7. Rewards. We all need a bit of motivation every now and then. To keep yourself on track, set yourself a goal and make sure there\u2019s a nice reward at the end of it \u2013 whether it\u2019s going to the pub, a tasty snack or\u00a0just an hour of downtime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    With many courses offering a hybrid model of learning, the ability to conduct self-directed study is more important than ever. It\u2019s a challenge, but it\u2019s worth it and will help you develop a brilliant work ethic. It\u2019s undeniable that the better you are at self-directed study, the greater your results will be. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
