If you\u2019re feeling lonely, the irony is that you\u2019re not alone. In fact, according to recent studies, over a quarter of your classmates feel lonely too. Loneliness is a big part of life that we will all experience whether we like it or not. It can be described as feeling like you don\u2019t or may not have enough friends and social contacts in either quantity, quality, or both.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, let\u2019s make feeling lonely a little less lonely by discussing it! At University of Winchester, there was even a society for those who appreciated pudding!<br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joining a society will help you to find your \u2018people\u2019. It\u2019ll give you an opportunity to get out each week and take you out of your comfort zone \u2013 helping you to grow your confidence and your friendship circle!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Get a hobby<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you are lonely and you like it that way, why not take up a hobby to do something constructive with your time?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When alone, it\u2019s easy to feel like you\u2019ve done nothing productive, which can increase the feeling of loneliness &#8211; even if you enjoy your own company.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a hobby will help combat the feeling of loneliness by giving you something to show for your time alone. You could do something crafty, you could learn a new language, you could learn how to code, and all from the comfort of your own bedroom.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once you\u2019ve honed your hobby, why not branch out and meet others with the same hobby? You\u2019ll find there\u2019s a Facebook group for everything in your local area.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Join the gym<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You don\u2019t have to be a fitness fanatic to join a gym. Gyms have something for everyone, be it yoga classes, cycling, swimming and more. Again, it\u2019s a great way to meet other people, but it is also an excellent opportunity to help yourself to feel great.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0277953617306639\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">significant link between mental and physical health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so looking after your physical health will have positive benefits for you mentally too. As well as feeling physically fitter, you\u2019ll mentally feel more confident which, again, will help you to leave your comfort zone and meet more people.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Speak to your course mates<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the start of the blog we mentioned that the equivalent of 1 in 4 students feel lonely. It\u2019s strange to know that if you look around your lecture hall or seminar group, there are others feeling exactly like you\u2026 so\u2026 strike up a conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ask them how they are, how they\u2019re finding the course and see if they want to have a study session. A study buddy could become a real buddy!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Get a job or volunteer<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Socialising can be expensive and it\u2019s one element of loneliness that isn\u2019t spoken about.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Getting a part-time job whilst studying is not only great for your CV, but it will help you to meet more people and earn some money so that you can spend it on going out and having fun.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Similarly, volunteering is another great way to meet people. Whilst it\u2019s unpaid, you can meet other likeminded people and have a great time whilst doing something productive for others. Afterall, didn\u2019t Gandhi say \u2018selflessness is the key to inner peace\u2019?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nTo conclude\u2026<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Okay, we know this <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">isn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> an essay, but it needs a conclusion nonetheless.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve touched upon how normal it is to feel lonely, and what you can do to combat that, but there is help out there.
