{"id":28975,"date":"2023-10-25T09:29:09","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T08:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kortext.com\/?p=28975"},"modified":"2024-09-05T09:00:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T09:00:23","slug":"decolonising-reading-lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kortext.com\/student-hub\/awareness-month\/decolonising-reading-lists\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month 2023 \u2013 decolonising reading lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the academic year 2020\/21, 39.4% of white graduates got a first class degree, compared with 20% of Black graduates, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk\/education-skills-and-training\/higher-education\/undergraduate-degree-results\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the gap between white and Black graduates achieving a first or 2:1 has narrowed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk\/education-skills-and-training\/higher-education\/undergraduate-degree-results\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from 26.2% in 2014\/15 to 18.6% in 2020\/21<\/a>), there is still much work to be done to address the disparity in attainment.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black History Month<\/a>, we look at how more diverse reading lists can foster student success and offer some suggestions for free eBooks from Kortext\u2019s Open Resources Collection.<\/p>\n<h3>What does \u2018decolonising reading lists\u2019 mean?<\/h3>\n<p>The movement to decolonise the curriculum aims to increase representation, present alternative narratives and offer a more inclusive learning experience for all students.<\/p>\n<p>One aspect of this involves decolonising reading lists. Why does this matter? Well, a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10734-019-00446-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that reading lists in UK universities are \u2018dominated by white, male and Eurocentric authors\u2019. Yet, over a quarter (27%) of students enrolling at UK universities in 2020\/21 gave their ethnicity as Black, Asian, Mixed or Other, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/data-and-analysis\/sb265\/figure-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HESA data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given this, it\u2019s important to curate learning resources that reflect the diversity of the student body, so <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10734-019-00446-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018the reading list becomes a tool to represent student perspectives, histories and interests\u2019<\/a>. However, there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all solution and what this looks like will vary from institution to institution.<\/p>\n<p>Cost is often a factor for university libraries when considering resource acquisition, but open educational resources offer an economical way to explore new content without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here are some titles from Kortext\u2019s Open Resources Collection for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28985 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kortext.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bhm-oer-1-1024x391.png\" alt=\"Black History Month Kortext Open Resources Collection\" width=\"\" height=\"244\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>Knocking the Hustle: Against the Neoliberal Turn in Black Politics<\/em> by Lester K. Spence<\/h3>\n<p>In recent years, a wealth gap linked to the neoliberal shift has forced individuals to adopt entrepreneurial mindsets and reshaped institutions as businesses. Spence\u2019s book addresses the impact of this on African American communities, challenging the notion of \u2018hustling\u2019 as empowering.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Black Love, Black Hate: Intimate Antagonisms in African American Literature<\/em> by Felice D. Blake<\/h3>\n<p>Blake highlights representations of intraracial conflicts in Black literature, exploring literary criticism\u2019s focus on Black solidarity. She shows how fiction serves as an alternative public sphere and a critical space for addressing complex issues within the Black community and reshaping social movements.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Emancipation&#8217;s Daughters: Reimagining Black Femininity and the National Body<\/em> by Rich\u00e9 Richardson<\/h3>\n<p>This text explores how iconic Black women leaders have challenged racial stereotypes and constructed new narratives of Black womanhood in the United States. Richardson acknowledges the exclusion of Black queer and trans women, but suggests inclusive models of blackness, femininity, and democracy.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Making Black History: Diasporic Fiction in the Moment of Afropolitanism<\/em> by Dominique Haensell<\/h3>\n<p>Haensell\u2019s study suggests viewing Afropolitanism as a distinct historical and cultural moment which allows us to see how Africa is represented in the predominantly Western cultural landscape of the 21st century. It examines contemporary African or Black Diaspora fictions written in this content.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28988 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kortext.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bhm-oer-2-1024x390.png\" alt=\"Black History Month Kortext Open Resources Collection\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>A Language of Song: Journeys in the Musical World of the African Diaspora<\/em> by Samuel Charters<\/h3>\n<p>Charters recounts his experiences from 50 years of documenting African American music in various locations, from West Africa to the United States, Brazil, and the Caribbean. His travel narratives include encounters with legendary musicians and insights into the evolution of various musical styles.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Publishing Blackness: Textual Constructions of Race Since 1850<\/em> by George Hutchinson &amp; John K. Young<\/h3>\n<p>This text explores how African American literature \u2013 from slave narratives to the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and Oprah&#8217;s Book Club \u2013 has been uniquely shaped by the cultural power struggles inherent in literary production and haunted by the commodification of blackness.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Black Cosmopolitans: Race, Religion, and Republicanism in an Age of Revolution<\/em> by Christine Levecq<\/h3>\n<p>Levecq explores the lives of three notable Black men in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world who made significant contributions to print culture. These men developed a cosmopolitan worldview rooted in civic virtue, connecting with Enlightenment ideals, Calvinism, the French Revolution, and freemasonry.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Culture-bearing Women: The Black Women Renaissance and Cultural Nationalism<\/em> by Izabella Penier<\/h3>\n<p>This book explores the late 20th-century Black Women&#8217;s Renaissance, focusing on African American women&#8217;s novels from the 1980s.
