Valentine’s Day is a big deal for some and just another day for others, but did you know different countries celebrate it in unique ways? While some stick to chocolates and roses, others have cool traditions that go way beyond romance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you’re all about romance, celebrating with your friends, or just treating yourself, here are some global traditions that might inspire your own February 14th plans!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Japan & South Korea: a two-part chocolate exchange<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

In Japan, Valentine’s Day flips the script \u2013 it’s\u202fwomen\u202fwho give chocolates to men. But there’s more to it:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Giri choco<\/span><\/i>\u202f= \u2018obligatory chocolates\u2019 for friends, co-workers, or bosses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Honmei choco<\/span><\/i>\u202f= romantic chocolates for someone special.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Then, one month later on\u202fMarch 14th, Japan and South Korea celebrate\u202fWhite Day, where men return the favour with chocolates, gifts and flowers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Wales: wooden love spoons instead of chocolates<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      Forget chocolates, Welsh couples exchange hand-carved wooden love spoons\u202f(<\/span>llwy garu<\/span><\/i>) on\u202fJanuary 25th\u202ffor\u202f<\/span>Dydd Santes Dwynwen<\/span><\/i>, the Welsh version of Valentine’s Day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      These spoons are decorated with symbols like keys (\u2018you have my heart\u2019) and knots (everlasting love). Perfect for spoon lovers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Brazil: Lovers’ Day in June<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      In Brazil, they skip the February 14th hype and instead celebrate\u202f<\/span>Dia dos Namorados<\/span><\/i>\u202fon\u202fJune 12th in honour of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of matchmaking. It\u2019s a mix of romance, family parties and street festivals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Singles even participate in traditions where they\u202fpray for love\u202f(fingers crossed it works!).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Denmark & Norway: secret love notes and snowdrops<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      Valentine\u2019s Day in Denmark and Norway comes with a fun twist, people exchange\u202fanonymous love letters\u202fcalled\u202f<\/span>gaekkebrev<\/span><\/i>, signing them with dots instead of their names. If the recipient guesses correctly, they win an\u202fEaster egg\u202flater in the year!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Instead of roses, Danes also give\u202fsnowdrop flowers \u2013 a cute, minimalist alternative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      The Philippines: say ‘I do’ in a mass wedding<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      Valentine\u2019s Day in the Philippines is a\u202fhuge deal, with thousands of couples getting married in\u202fmass wedding ceremonies\u202fsponsored by the government.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      It\u2019s a beautiful way to make marriage more accessible while celebrating love in a big way. Public proposals, parades and festive celebrations also make February 14th extra special there!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      South Africa: wearing your crush\u2019s name<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      In South Africa, people take \u2018wearing your heart on your sleeve\u2019 literally. Inspired by an ancient Roman festival, many pin the\u202fname of their crush or partner to their sleeve\u202ffor the day. Want to make a bold move on your campus crush? This tradition might be for you!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Finland & Estonia: celebrating friendships instead<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

      Not into the romance hype? Finland and Estonia celebrate\u202fFriend\u2019s Day (<\/span>Yst\u00e4v\u00e4np\u00e4iv\u00e4\/S\u00f5brap\u00e4ev<\/span><\/i>)\u202finstead!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      It\u2019s all about showing love for your\u202ffriends, classmates and family members, proving that Valentine\u2019s Day doesn\u2019t have to be just for couples.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
