Starting university felt like diving headfirst into the unknown \u2013 exciting, terrifying, and a little bit surreal. I remember arriving with my suitcase and big expectations: I thought I\u2019d have it all figured out in no time. I didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back now as I prepare to graduate, I\u2019ve learned so much more than what\u2019s on my course syllabus. So here it is, a letter to my past self, and maybe to you too: what I wish I knew as a first-year student.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone feels awkward at first, even the ones who look like they don\u2019t\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the first few weeks, I was constantly convinced that everyone else had already found their people, figured out the campus map, and was thriving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I was calling my parents for every minor issue and pretending I knew where my seminar was.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Truth is, everyone\u2019s faking it a little in first year. Everyone\u2019s nervous. Give it time, real friendships don\u2019t always happen overnight. I made some of my best friends towards the end of first year, so give yourself a chance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s okay not to love every second\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s so much pressure to treat university as the \u2018best years of your life\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But honestly? Some days are tough. Some weeks feel overwhelming. And sometimes you just miss home, or feel lonely, or question why you chose your degree.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re doing it wrong. It just means you\u2019re human. The highs are beautiful, and the lows teach you more than you expect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to say yes to everything\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In first year, I said yes to everything: every night out, every society, every group project, every plan. I thought if I wasn\u2019t constantly busy, I was missing out.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But I wish I knew that rest is just as important as involvement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s okay to miss a night out. You\u2019ll still find your people and they\u2019ll love you whether you go clubbing every week or not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll change (and that\u2019s a good thing)!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

First year felt like a blur of discovering who I was without school uniforms, routines, or childhood labels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I learned that it\u2019s okay to grow, to change opinions, to try new things and let go of old versions of myself. University is a space to expand, not shrink. Don\u2019t be afraid to evolve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t wait until the last minute to do your reading (but if you do\u2026 skim smart)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I spent a lot of first year either procrastinating or panicking. I wish I\u2019d known that getting into a routine early saves so much stress later. Even doing some of the reading consistently makes seminars so much less intimidating.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk to your lecturers, they\u2019re not as scary as they seem\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I used to think lecturers were these distant, unapproachable beings who only spoke in essay feedback and academic jargon. Wrong!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the most helpful advice and encouragement I got came from just popping into office hours or asking questions after class. They want you to do well. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for help. It doesn\u2019t make you look weak, it makes you look engaged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make your room a safe space\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your uni room isn\u2019t just a place to crash, it\u2019s your little sanctuary.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In first year, mine was a weird mix of washing piles and random lights, but I learned how important it was to make it feel like mine.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Photos, cosy blankets, fairy lights, tiny things make a big difference when you\u2019re trying to make a new place feel like home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From me to you\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

First year is messy, magical, emotional, and full of lessons that don\u2019t come from a textbook.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And while I made plenty of mistakes, I wouldn\u2019t change a thing, because every awkward encounter, every small win, every tear and every laugh shaped the student (and person) I\u2019ve become.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re in first year and feeling a bit lost, you\u2019re not alone. Take your time. Be kind to yourself. Trust that you\u2019re growing, even when it doesn\u2019t feel like it.<\/span><\/p>\n
