Before starting uni, I had a highlight reel in my head.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You know the one: walking across a scenic campus with a coffee in hand, laughing with a group of best friends I’d meet on day one, getting my life together in the form of colour-coded notes and homemade oat milk lattes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was ready for a new chapter, and I thought I knew exactly how it would go.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spoiler alert: it didn\u2019t exactly go like that. In fact, uni turned out to be a mix of unexpected lessons, chaotic brilliance, and real growth. Here\u2019s how my expectations stacked up against reality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectation: I\u2019ll instantly click with everyone\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I genuinely thought I\u2019d be surrounded by \u2018my people\u2019 immediately. Like, I’d sit next to someone in my first lecture and we\u2019d instantly become inseparable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reality: uni can be a bit lonely at first. People are friendly, but everyone\u2019s figuring things out. It took time (and some random societies and group projects) to find the people I clicked with. But once I did? Totally worth the wait.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectation: I\u2019ll have so much free time\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I looked at my timetable and thought, \u2018Only eight hours of lectures a week? I\u2019m gonna be SO productive!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Reality: somehow, I was still always busy. Between readings, cooking, washing, mental breakdowns, and binge-watching random shows instead of doing my work, time just vanished. Lesson learned: free time \u2260 actually being free.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectation: I\u2019ll become super healthy and organised\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I bought a planner. I thought I\u2019d start journaling daily and go for morning runs like some sort of Pinterest board brought to life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reality: I lived off cereal and toast for the first term. My planner became a coaster. And I did go for runs\u2026 in my dreams. Uni life is unpredictable, and honestly? That\u2019s okay. You don\u2019t need to be perfect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectation: I\u2019ll be wildly inspired by every lecture\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I thought uni lectures would be like TED Talks, where I\u2019d leave every session with a life-changing epiphany.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reality: some lectures were amazing. Sometimes I was inspired, sometimes I was overwhelmed, and sometimes I was just confused. The key is learning to engage even when it\u2019s not thrilling, and asking for help when you need it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectation: Freshers\u2019 week will be the time of my life\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Films and TikTok made me think Freshers\u2019 was going to be non-stop parties, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reality: it was intense. Some nights were fun, others were overwhelming. I got sick, I got lost, I cried in a toilet once. But the best uni memories? They came later. During chill nights, spontaneous flat dinners, and deep chats at 2am.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Summing it all up\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

University isn\u2019t what I expected and honestly, that\u2019s the best part.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It challenged me, humbled me, and taught me way more than what was on the syllabus. Sure, the reality didn\u2019t always match the fantasy. But the messy, unfiltered version? That\u2019s where the real growth happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re starting uni and it\u2019s not all sunshine and studying montages, breathe. You\u2019re not doing it wrong. You\u2019re just doing it for real.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
