Starting university can be an exciting and\u00a0<\/span>nerve-wracking experience. A mix of independence and opportunity \u2013 so it can feel challenging to find where you truly belong. For many students, one of the best ways to connect, destress and thrive academically at\u00a0<\/span>uni<\/span>\u00a0is by getting involved in hobbies or joining societies. At the University of East London,\u00a0<\/span>there\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0no\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>shortage of that.\u00a0<\/span>Whether\u00a0<\/span>you’re<\/span>\u00a0into music, volunteering, gaming<\/span>\u00a0or like me<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0passionate about sports\u202fand fitness,\u00a0<\/span>there’s<\/span>\u00a0a community for everyone where you can feel a sense of belonging<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My hobby – how the gym keeps me grounded<\/span><\/p>\n

As a UEL student and someone who is into health and fitness, the gym has become an essential part of my daily university routine. Where I go between lectures, assignments and any sort of work commitments \u2013 stepping into the gym feels like a well-deserved reset. Personally, fitness isn\u2019t just about physical health \u2013 it\u2019s about building discipline, focus and mental clarity. \u200b\u200bIt builds structure in my day-to-day life which reflects in my studies.<\/p>\n

UEL\u2019s SportsDock, a state-of-the-art sports facility located on UEL\u2019s Dockland\u2019s campus, has been a huge part of my journey. The vibes there are unmatched, whether it\u2019s about lifting weights, playing basketball with friends or joining a fitness class. It\u2019s a place where people from all backgrounds come together with shared energy and motivation. It\u2019s not only about working out but also about being a part of a community that pushes each other to do better.<\/p>\n

Why hobbies matter in university life<\/h3>\n

Uni life can be overwhelming at times, especially when you\u2019re caught juggling coursework, part-time jobs and other social commitments. Having a hobby or joining a society, regardless of what it might \u200b\u200bbe, creates a healthy,balanced approach to \u200b\u200bkeeping a clear head and makes you feel ready to tackle another day. For me, going to the gym has taught me time management – planning workouts around my study schedule has helped me stay consistent and productive.<\/p>\n

Beyond personal benefits, hobbies also give you something to look forward to \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>a space where you can freely express yourself and recharge after a long day.\u00a0<\/span>They\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0essential to\u00a0<\/span>maintaining<\/span>\u00a0your physical and mental wellbeing during your time at university.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> not a sports enthusiast, joining a society can help you find your people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
