As we mark\u00a0<\/span><\/span>UK Disability History Month<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0this November and December,\u00a0<\/span>it’s<\/span>\u00a0the perfect time to reflect on how far\u00a0<\/span>we’ve<\/span>\u00a0come in making education accessible for all\u00a0<\/span>students and<\/span>\u00a0honestly acknowledge where we still have work to do.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>r<\/span>eality on\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ampus<\/span><\/h3>\n

According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, around\u00a0<\/span>16% of UK students disclosed a disability in 2022\/23<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0That’s\u00a0roughly one\u00a0in six students navigating university with\u00a0additional\u00a0challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From dyslexia and ADHD to physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions. These\u00a0aren’t\u00a0just statistics. They\u00a0represent\u00a0real students balancing lectures, assignments, and exams while managing conditions that can make everyday tasks significantly harder.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know this firsthand. I was recently diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and two processing disorders. Add in mental health struggles\u00a0I’ve\u00a0dealt with in the past, and university becomes a completely\u00a0different experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s\u00a0not just about understanding the course material.\u00a0It’s\u00a0about managing sensory overload in crowded lecture halls, processing information that comes at you too fast, remembering deadlines when your brain feels like\u00a0it’s\u00a0juggling a hundred things at once, and somehow keeping up with advanced academics.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, and in my case, holding down a day job to keep the lights on too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When people talk about accessibility in education,\u00a0they’re\u00a0talking about whether students like me can\u00a0access\u00a0our education in a meaningful way, or whether\u00a0we’re\u00a0constantly exhausted just trying to keep up with systems that\u00a0weren’t\u00a0designed with us in mind.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Progress we should celebrate<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

There’s\u00a0genuinely been incredible progress\u00a0– disability support services exist at\u00a0virtually every\u00a0university now. Students can access note-takers, extra exam time, and alternative assessment formats. The conversation around invisible disabilities has expanded massively, ten years ago\u00a0talking about ADHD or anxiety in academic settings felt taboo.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, students are more willing to\u00a0disclose\u00a0their needs and seek support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology has been a game changer too. Screen readers, speech-to-text software, and digital textbooks have transformed how students with various disabilities can access course materials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The shift to digital learning during the pandemic, while challenging for everyone, inadvertently highlighted how flexible learning formats benefit disabled students who had been asking for these options all along.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Universities are also improving physical accessibility. More buildings have ramps, lifts, and accessible toilets. Lecture recordings are becoming standard practice, helping students who struggle with\u00a0notetaking\u00a0or who need to review content multiple times.<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenges that remain<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

But\u00a0let’s\u00a0talk about what still needs work. Inconsistency is a massive issue\u00a0–\u00a0support\u00a0shouldn’t\u00a0depend on whether individual staff members happen to be empathetic or understanding\u00a0– it\u00a0needs to be embedded in how courses are designed from the start.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having to explain your needs repeatedly, to every lecturer, every semester\u00a0is exhausting when\u00a0you’re\u00a0already managing a disability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stigma\u00a0remains\u00a0a real barrier too.\u00a0<\/span>Research from disability charity Scope<\/span><\/a>\u00a0shows that many students\u00a0don’t\u00a0disclose\u00a0disabilities because they fear judgment or\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to be seen as less capable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s\u00a0this persistent worry that people will think\u00a0you’re\u00a0looking for special treatment or trying to get an unfair advantage. Accommodations\u00a0aren’t\u00a0advantages,\u00a0they’re\u00a0adjustments that let you\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0what you\u00a0actually know, not how well you can navigate barriers that\u00a0shouldn’t\u00a0exist in the first place.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The financial burden is another challenge rarely discussed. While DSA (Disabled Students’ Allowance) exists, not everyone qualifies\u00a0and the application process can be overwhelming when\u00a0you’re\u00a0already dealing with a disability.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some assistive technology is expensive, and not all universities provide it readily. For students working jobs alongside their studies, the time and money\u00a0required\u00a0to access proper support can feel impossible to manage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s\u00a0also the issue of neurodiversity being overlooked in traditional teaching methods. Lectures that rely solely on auditory learning, tight deadlines that\u00a0don’t\u00a0account for different processing speeds, and environments that\u00a0don’t\u00a0consider sensory needs all create unnecessary barriers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0you’re\u00a0dealing with processing disorders, being expected to absorb, process, and\u00a0retain\u00a0information at the same pace as neurotypical students\u00a0isn’t\u00a0realistic without proper support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving\u00a0forward\u00a0together<\/span><\/b>
<\/span>So\u00a0what needs to happen? We need universal design in education, where courses are built with accessibility in mind from day one, not as an afterthought.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We need better training for\u00a0staff\u00a0so they understand different disabilities and how to support students effectively.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to keep talking about these issues openly, challenging stigma wherever it appears.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly, we need to listen to disabled students themselves. We know what works and what\u00a0doesn\u2019t, our\u00a0experiences should drive policy changes, not be sidelined.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
