Let\u2019s\u00a0be real here, this is a big choice.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not about what other people are using, what costs the least, what the latest tech is \u2013 this choice has got to be based on your personal study habits, course\u00a0requirements\u00a0and budget.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To help you decide whether you need a tablet\u00a0as well as a laptop to study with,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0pulled together a\u00a0list of\u00a0pros and cons, so you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The case for\u00a0laptops<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

+\u00a0Starting with the main and most glaringly obvious visual difference: the presence of a keyboard. Depending on which course\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0taking, 3 years of university involves a LOT of typing\u00a0\u2013 whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0making notes, writing assignments, sending emails.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, having a self-standing device with its own physical keyboard separate from the screen, is\u00a0definitely a\u00a0point for team laptop.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+ Better compatibility with course-specific software. Speaking from experience\u00a0(psychology\u00a0grad\u00a0\ud83d\udc4b)\u00a0not all\u00a0software is compatible\u00a0with tablet devices.\u00a0If an assignment requires you to learn or use a certain software as a\u00a0part of your course, you might want to look ahead and ensure\u00a0its\u00a0compatible with your device before you make the purchase.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+ Screen size.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
You can get some BIG tablet devices, but as soon as that keyboard pops up, you lose half the\u00a0screen! With a laptop, not only is the screen size larger, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0self-standing and\u00a0more compatible with monitors.\u00a0This way, you can split screen, use multiple screens to look at and explore multiple windows at once!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+ In-built file management.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
Tablet devices do have designated areas to\u00a0store files, but\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0not as interactive or\u00a0customisable as the organisation systems built into laptops.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0here you can colour code folders, creating your own filing systems that work for you, helping you to find the learning materials you need, when you need them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0not as portable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
They\u2019re\u00a0bigger,\u00a0heavier\u00a0and just not as convenient as smaller, tablet devices.\u00a0Taking a laptop to\u00a0uni\u00a0in a bag\u00a0already\u00a0filled with study snacks, books and a\u00a0water bottle,\u00a0make\u00a0it so much heavier and less comfortable to carry around university or on the\u00a0long\u00a0commute to and from campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0Battery life.\u00a0Typically (device dependent of course), tablets offer 8-15 hours of charge, where laptops usually offer 5-10 hours of charge. For an\u00a0hour-long\u00a0lecture,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not going to make much\u00a0of a\u00a0difference but for\u00a0a whole day\u00a0of lectures, you might be anxiously watching the battery %\u00a0instead of concentrating on your\u00a0learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Reading strain.\u00a0Reading on a laptop\u00a0generally causes\u00a0more eye strain than\u00a0a tablet. The structure of a laptop means that small text is further away from your eyes, requiring more muscle effort to focus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
BUT we have the answer to this one\u00a0(cue\u00a0humble brag). Reading on\u00a0Kortext\u00a0means you can\u00a0easily\u00a0change the text size or zoom in and out\u00a0to make text bigger. Think about curling up with an eBook, blanket round you, cuppa tea on the go, legs tucked up beneath you on the sofa. You could read on a tablet quite comfortably here, holding it as close or as far away from your\u00a0eyes\u00a0as\u00a0you\u00a0need. Doing this with a bulky laptop just\u00a0isn’t\u00a0comfortable \u2013 tablets take the win here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+ Tends to be cheaper (device-dependent)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking into the stats, tablets\u00a0average around \u00a3100-\u00a3300 for an entry-level device,\u00a0whereas\u00a0laptop can cost anything from \u00a3400-\u00a32000+.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
As with any product\u00a0though, you tend to get what you pay for.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0always good to look at your course needs and\u00a0purchase\u00a0accordingly. Someone taking on a software-heavy\u00a0course\u00a0may need a\u00a0more expensive device with more processing power than another student on\u00a0a\u00a0more\u00a0practical-heavy course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cases with keyboards, Bluetooth mouses, kickstands, I could go on!\u00a0The variety of attachments that are available for tablet devices is broad \u2013 if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0a student who loves to customise,\u00a0a tablet\u00a0could be the way forward\u00a0(remember to watch the price tag\u00a0as these add-ons can add up!).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+\u00a0Good for art-based courses<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital drawing is a huge part of so many arts-based degrees. Devices that are made for drawing and\u00a0the Bluetooth pens that go with them are\u00a0almost an\u00a0essential!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0Keyboard takes up a lot of the screen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
We mentioned this\u00a0earlier,\u00a0but it really is\u00a0the main sticking point. Typing is awkward without a keyboard\u00a0and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to have full visibility of the page as you type!\u00a0Unless\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0willing to spend on a Bluetooth keyboard, this really is a tricky hurdle to get around.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0Multiple windows are clunky to navigate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0not as easy to multitask on a tablet as it is on a laptop. When\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0researching and you have about 50 tabs worth of journal articles open on your browser,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0far easier to click between them on a laptop, than it is a tablet.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Distractions\u00a0from other apps<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tablets tend to have that distraction factor that laptops\u00a0don\u2019t. With all the social media and streaming apps downloaded\u00a0and messages pinging through,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not so easy to\u00a0compartmentalise study-time with down-time as it is on a laptop.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An option\u00a0is to get an app that locks your \u2018distraction apps\u2019 between a certain\u00a0timeframe\u00a0or after a certain amount of screen time \u2013 but still, it never helps to have the temptation right there on your home screen!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using both tablet and laptop can save the need for an\u00a0additional\u00a0monitor!\u00a0Have your lecture video on the tablet and make notes on your laptop as you go.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using\u00a0multiple devices\u00a0at once\u00a0opens up\u00a0a variety of different options,\u00a0so you can study in a way that works for you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Realistically,\u00a0laptops are a bit of a non-negotiable for university, but tablets\u00a0as an\u00a0additional\u00a0device\u00a0definitely have\u00a0their benefits. If your budget\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0stretch to having\u00a0one,\u00a0a laptop\u00a0is\u00a0all you need to be able\u00a0to ace your course!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
