Starting university is an exhilarating new chapter in your life filled with new experiences, and opportunities, but also plenty of new challenges. Whether you’re feeling a little nervous or bursting with excitement, I’ve got your back with some helpful tips to make your first year even more amazing!
Every year counts
The main thing I wish someone told me when I started my first year of university is that every year counts. Academically, even if your first-year grades don’t count towards your final grade, it’s important you learn how to write a university level essay now, ready for second year when your grades do count!
Beyond that, don’t forget university goes by quickly so make the most of every day. Join societies, try new things and get involved. Universities offer so many activities. Explore your interests and passions by joining a society or sports team. It’s a great way to meet new people and enrich your university experience. Don’t get complacent!
Stay organised
With classes, assignments, extracurricular activities, and nights out it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Stay on top of your game by using a planner or digital calendar to manage your schedule. Prioritise tasks and make time for studying, relaxation, and socialising.
Attend welcome week events
Welcome week isn’t just about freebies and campus tours – it’s a fantastic opportunity to familiarise yourself with university resources, meet fellow students, and get involved in campus life. Don’t risk missing out on valuable information and experiences!
Get into a healthy routine
Establishing a routine can help you maintain balance and productivity. Set aside dedicated study hours, exercise regularly, and make sure you get enough sleep. It’s easy to let yourself slip into unhealthy behaviours especially in first year when everything’s new. Looking after yourself should be your main priority. Make time for exercise, walks, and relaxation. Remember, taking care of yourself is non-negotiable.
Seek support
Don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you need it. Whether it’s academic assistance from professors or mental health support from student services, there are plenty of resources available to help you if you need it. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and most people struggle in some form in their first year. It’s a big adjustment.
If you’re finding it challenging to manage everything on your mind or feeling a bit overwhelmed, that’s completely normal and you’re not alone. You can visit Student Minds for information and support, and if you use the Kortext bookshelf, there is a direct link to Student Space.
Don’t lose touch
Staying connected with family and friends back home while also nurturing new relationships at university is so important. Having a strong support system can make the transition to university life much smoother.
Manage your finances
Budgeting may not be the most exciting task, but it’s crucial in your first year. Keep track of your expenses, prioritise essentials, and look for ways to save money. Consider getting a part-time job or applying for a hardship fund if you need it.
Your first year at university is an incredible experience. You will make so many memories and have a great time. But remember it is what you make it. Don’t forget to focus on your studies and yourself while getting stuck in. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll have an amazing first year at university!
