Kortext and Student Minds – continuing our shared commitment to student mental health

Kortext is delighted to announce that – for the third year running – we’ve partnered with Student Minds, the UK’s leading student mental health charity.

For us, it’s more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to student support, as recent research by Student Minds revealed that one third of students have poor mental well-being.

Student mental health today

The impact of mental health issues can be life-changing for some students. The latest Advance HE/HEPI Student Experience Survey found that over a quarter (28%) of students had considered leaving university in 2023, with 29% of those citing ‘my mental/emotional health’ as the reason.

At first glance, this might seem like an improvement on the previous year’s survey, in which 30% of students reported they had considered leaving university, but that’s not the whole story.

For Advance HE/HEPI, this doesn’t ‘necessarily mean that there are fewer mental health concerns among the student population’, but rather ‘there are other factors that are growing in influence’. The most significant of these is the impact of the cost of living crisis on student well-being.

Support at the point of need

Since its inception in 2009, Student Minds has empowered students ‘to build their own mental health toolkit to support themselves and their peers through university life and beyond’.

Their work spans the higher education sector, the health sector, and government, with the aim of ensuring that every student gets the mental health support they need to reach their goals. Kortext’s donation and corporate partnership enable Student Minds to continue their vital mission.

We believe that all students should be able to find mental health support at point of need, so we include a direct link to Student Minds’ online hub, Student Space, in the Kortext bookshelf.

Launched in 2020, Student Space contains expert information and advice on managing the challenges of university life, including the cost of living crisis. Plus, it offers dedicated support services, such as 24/7 text messaging, so a student never has to feel alone.

Why is Student Minds important to Kortext?

Kortext provides digital learning and engagement solutions for over two million students at more than 5,000 institutions worldwide.

We help students to succeed with our vast library of eBooks, innovative AI study tools, and powerful StREAM learner analytics platform.

As a trusted university partner, we’re deeply invested in the student journey and we understand how mental health issues can impact on student well-being and outcomes. Consequently, we are proud to support Student Minds, the student mental health experts.

In March, Kortext staff will be tackling Student Minds’ Step into Spring challenge, fundraising to create a future where every student is able to thrive. Last year, colleagues walked an amazing 100km, raising over £1,000!

“We’re extremely proud to once again be partnering with Student Minds, supporting the fantastic work they do to elevate the subject of student mental health in higher education. Many students are struggling with well-being and mental health so it’s our purpose to both highlight the issues and to offer support wherever possible.

Through spotlighting the Student Space on our platforms, fostering awareness of the invaluable assistance offered by Student Minds, and actively participating in fundraisers and events, we are committed to contributing to the well-being of students. Our goal is to aid them in navigating stress, and alleviating anxiety, to ultimately enjoy a happier and more supported university experience.”

Robin Gibson, Director of External Affairs at Kortext.

“Student Minds are excited to be partnered with Kortext once again! Together, with our partners’ support, we can work together to ensure that no student is held back by their mental health. We’re looking forward to deepening our relationship with Kortext and exploring ways in which we can work together for the betterment of student mental health.” James Watson, Partnerships Manager, Student Minds.
