End-to-end interventions: stream’s real superpower

With learning analytics evolving quickly and becoming the norm for higher education institutions, the question has moved from ‘do I need engagement analytics software?’ to ‘which software helps me get the most from my data?’

Insight is only the beginning

Our conversations with institutions emphasise the importance of a system that facilitates both the data insights and a space for reporting & escalation.

As Rachel Maxwell, Kortext Director of Sector Engagement and Academic Research observed, “institutions often assume ‘we need analytics – it’s the fix,’” only to discover that data without follow up, doesn’t elicit change.

The impact isn’t made through observing risk, it’s about being institutionally ready to respond to it.

What endtoend looks like in practice: stream’s interventions panel

Kortext stream uses data feeds to spot low engagement – but this is the just the start of the platform’s transformative capabilities. Where stream really drives impact, is in its capacity to facilitate referrals and log interventions.

As Tai Luong, Senior Learning Analytics Data Manager at the University of Bedfordshire described in our January webinar:

“(Kortext stream’s) superpower isn’t predominantly the algorithm; it’s the interaction or intervention panel. You can seamlessly refer students to the appropriate support team within the institution. That, to me, is magic.”

At Bedfordshire, staff record meetings, make notes on student conversations and refer students directly to relevant support services – all within the same workflow.

This closes the gap right where students typically fall through the cracks.

The interventions page in Kortext stream is a key place to record all interactions that a student has had with support teams across the institution.

Ran by real people, enabled by stream

Humans – not technology – are central to student success. The issues that students are facing, can’t simply be dealt with on an automated basis. They need human interaction, the understanding that only comes from empathy and lived experience.

Many institutions take a 2-pronged approach to engagement analytics, using stream to highlight the at-risk students, then reinforcing that with teams who proactively contact students, rather than relying on stream’s automated email alerts.

Crucially this approach reframed analytics as an enabler of support and not as a surveillance mechanism.

Coordinated action: stream as a single source of truth

For some institutions, the challenge is less about detection and more about consistency. In these instances, stream can be used as an opportunity to curate a shared reference point for staff (and students – if enabled) across the university.

This approach ensures that teams across the institution can all see a unified pool of the same information, in the same place, eliminating data silos and facilitating a single source of truth.

Kortext stream’s real superpower

Many of our partner institutions see stream’s greatest strength not as prediction, but as connection.

Connecting:

  • Insight and intervention
  • Staff and students
  • Data and action

When institutions use stream to bring teams together, analytics stop being performative and start being transformative.
