Designing a frictionless student journey

Today’s prospective students are digital natives. They manage their lives directly from their smartphones – making purchases, arranging plans, checking emails, catching up with family – everything they need, accessible on a single device. 

Universities, by contrast, are rushing to catch up. For many, their legacies go back centuries, and they still find themselves steeped in administrative processes and physical infrastructure that doesn’t gel with student expectations. 

When the two sides meet at the university gates come enrolment day, that disconnect can be destabilising for both sides. 

Friction in action: what do we mean by friction anyway?

For students, friction can look like an ‘incorrect password’ message, it can look like incompatibility with mobile devices, platform downtime before exam season, unreadable file-types, links buried inside links – all making what should be easy, a time vacuum. 

For staff, it’s much the same. Reuploading reading lists multiple times into different platforms, outdated lecture slides surfacing instead of relevant content, students asking shadow AI instead of a trusted source, the list goes on.

First step to frictionless: integrate, integrate, integrate

• VLE integration
  The VLE acts as an aggregator of all a student’s learning resources. From reading lists to lecture notes and recordings, it’s all available inside one key access point. If it’s not in the VLE, embedded directly into user workflow, adoption can prove a significant challenge for staff and students. 

• Device compatibility
  Make learning fit into the modern-day student’s mobile-first habits. If a platform can’t be viewed on a tablet or phone, you’re ultimately taking valuable learning time away from students who are trying to access on their commute or when their laptop is out of battery. 

24/7 access means uptime statistics are key

Student life in 2026 is characterised by high living costs and consequently, a growing reliance on part-time work (HEPI, 2025). This means students are turning to digital resources to fill in the gaps.

If they miss a lecture or seminar due to a work shift, they need to be able to catch up – even if that means outside of office hours. This is also the case for students who have family responsibilities, those with illness – even night-owls or early birds. Facilitating 24/7 access levels the playing field for every student.
