Five open access eBooks on sustainable transport
Did you know that 26 November is World Sustainable Transport Day?
Sustainable transport provides safe, affordable, accessible and efficient movement of people and goods while minimising environmental impacts, according to the United Nations.
However, it’s also central to achieving sustainable development. In fact, sustainable transport can accelerate progress on crucial global goals like eradicating poverty, reducing inequality, empowering women, and combatting climate change.
In recognition of World Sustainable Transport Day, we’ve handpicked five eBooks from the Kortext Open Resources Collection, which contains 20,000+ open access, free-to-use titles.
1. Green Economy in the Transport Sector: A Case Study of Limpopo Province, South Africa, edited by John Ogony Odiyo et al.
An interdisciplinary book exploring sustainable development and transportation in South Africa. It analyses institutional frameworks, climate change, and best practices while addressing connections between sectors. This aims to inform urban policy, promote a green economy and enable effective planning, while contributing to national strategic aspirations in South Africa.
2. Intelligent and Efficient Transport Systems: Design, Modelling, Control and Simulation, by Truong Quang Dinh
This text investigates digital and technological solutions for real-world transportation challenges across various sectors. It includes guidelines for evaluating vehicle energy efficiency, designing electric propulsion systems, and opportunities in intelligent transportation and smart cities. Additionally, it covers system control and bespoke modelling tools.
3. Decarbonizing Freight Transport: Acceptance and Policy Implications, by Sarah Pfoser
Pfoser evaluates sustainable freight transport acceptance and proposes a new policy framework for decarbonisation. Arguing that existing measures are insufficient, the author explores three alternative strategies: horizontal collaboration, multimodal transport, and LNG as fuel. The text aims to align policies with user needs to reduce emissions in freight transport.
4. Powertrain Systems for Net-Zero Transport, edited by Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Drawing on the 2021 Powertrain Systems for Net-Zero Transport Conference, this volume includes contributions from engine, fuels, e-machine, fuel cell and powertrain experts on developments in powertrain technology to meet the demands of the net-zero future and global competition in the road transportation, off-highway and stationary power industries.
5. The Future of Transport Between Digitalization and Decarbonization: Trends, Strategies and Effects on Energy Consumption, by Michel Noussan et al.
This study examines the decarbonisation and digitalisation transformation in the transport sector, focusing on energy consumption. By studying historical patterns and outlining future scenarios, it illustrates the evolution of energy consumption, compares decarbonisation strategies, and analyses digitalisation trends and their effects on energy consumption.
